Modeled
after a stately English home, The Hatfield House in Hertfordshire,
England, The Vernon Manor Hotel has the ambiance one would expect of a
gracious English Manor. The hotel was built in 1924, as an escape and
retreat for the then wealthy Cincinnati residents from the busy
downtown riverfront district which was referred to as "Porkopolis" due
to the city’s leading business, pork processing. The Vernon Manor sat
above the city, perched on one of Cincinnati’s famous Seven Hills,
treating lucky visitors to wonderful service and a spectacular view.

Over the years The Vernon Manor Hotel has been the “home away from
home” choice of hundreds of national and international celebrities,
athletes, and musicians. Presidents Johnson, Kennedy, Bush, and
dignitaries such as former First Lady Nancy Reagan, and former Prime
Minister Shimon Peres have stayed at the Vernon Manor. Famous athletes
including Tiger Woods, Pete Rose, Brooks Robinson, Tom Seaver, Davey
Johnson, Jack McKeon, The Indiana Pacers, and The Cincinnati Bengals
have all chosen “400 Oak Street” at their address in Cincinnati. The
Vernon Manor Hotel has also been a long time favorite of various actors
and celebrities including: Anthony Quinn, Yul Brynner, Ted Turner, Jane
Fonda, Judy Garland, Dean Jones, Kevin Bacon, Cloris Leachman, Mikhail
Baryshnikov, Keanu Reeves, Rene Zellweger, Matthew Broderick, and Sarah
Jessica Parker.
The Vernon Manor Hotel has always had the reputation for being “The”
place to stay for musicians visiting or performing in Cincinnati. The
list of former Vernon Manor Hotel guests with famous musical talent is
both long and impressive. This list includes: The Beatles, Bob Dylan,
Willie Nelson, Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, Little Richard, Luther
Vandross, Gerald LeVert, The Monkees, Boy George, Dru Hill, The Indigo
Girls, Grover Washington, Mandy Moore, 98 Degrees, Nick Lachey, Big

center stage and temporary home for the production of 1988's Movie of
the Year "Rainman" featuring stars Dustin Hoffman and Tom
Cruise, in which our address "400 Oak Street, Cincinnati, Ohio" was a
featured line. We hope we'll have the opportunity to add your signature

Hog Wild!
In the summer of
2000, Cincinnati kicked off its largest public art show - The Big Pig
Gig. The "Gig" celebrated Cincinnati's Porkopolis heritage by
displaying over 400 decorated fiberglass pigs throughout the city. In
early November 2000, the pigs were auctioned raising over $800,000 for
local charities. The Vernon Manor Hotel contributed to the event by
bidding on Armored
Hammer, who now resides in the
hotel lobby.
Thomas
Hieronymus Towhey and Denny Wallace created Armored
Hammer, whose name is a multilevel pun on the name of the
art collector Armand Hammer and the baking soda. The armor is custom
cut stainless and carbon steel plate, built around a skeleton of scrap
metal upon the fiberglass pig. Armored Hammer
is a fitting addition to The Vernon Manor Hotel, which was built in
1924 and was modeled after The Hatfield House in Hertfordshire,
England. The Hatfield House, built in 1611, is known for its world
famous paintings, exquisite furniture, fine tapestries and historic
armor. In fact The Long Room at the Hatfield House is appropriately
named the "Armory" and houses a private collection of antique armor,
most of which was used in the Spanish Armada. The Hatfield House is
also home to the British Model Soldier Society's National Collection,
one of the finest collection of model soldiers in the world.
